A steeply sloping pit many miles across and as many miles deep, it was opened by the Upheaver in the Age of Darkness not far from the west coast of the Western Continent. Scholars have surmised it is identical in dimensions to the Great Volcano.
Over the many epochs of its existence untold number of creatures have emerged from the depths of the Deep Well, but it is dwarves who have proven the most significant. This is where they first appeared onto the surface, and it is they who have named it for they consider themselves to have sprung up from it much like water in the Living Rock: like water, the dwarven race was always there, hidden until revealed by the digging of a well.
The dwarves excavated their first city, The Deep Delve on the northern face of the Deep Well, and have appointed themselves guardians against the worst creatures that may climb out to menace folk. Great threats have been few in recent generations, but there are prophecies that this is but the calm before a storm.
